A formal theory of dependency syntax with non-lexical units

چکیده
The paper describes a formal theory for the dependency approach to syntax. The formalism is able to deal with long-distance dependencies, involved in function sharing and extractions. The distinctive aspects of the approach are the use of non lexical categories and a GPSG-style treatment of long-distance dependencies. The formalism is applied to a number of coordination phenomena, that are well-known in the literature.

Unit Coordination And Gapping In Dependency Theory
The paper investigates the problem of representing coordination constructs in a formal system for the dependency approach to syntax. The distinctive aspect of the formalism is the presence of non-lexical (trace ~) nodes in the representation. We illustrate the basic mechanisms, and how they can account for syntactic phenomena involving long-distance dependencies. Then, we see how the same mecha...
متن کاملMovement Rules Revisited
The Praguian approach to formal description of language (in detail, see Sgall et aI. 1986), works with dependency syntax and includes the topicfocus articulation into the (underlying, tectogrammatical) syntactic representations of sentences, using the left-to-right order of the nodes of the dependency tree for that purpose. The edges of the tree denote the dependency relations and the nodes car...
متن کاملMildly Non-Projective Dependency Grammar
Syntactic representations based on word-to-word dependencies have a long tradition in descriptive linguistics, and receive considerable interest in many computational applications. However, dependency syntax has remained somewhat of an island from a formal point of view, which hampers the exchange of resources and computational methods with other syntactic traditions. In this article, we presen...
متن کاملHindi Syntax: Annotating Dependency, Lexical Predicate-Argument Structure, and Phrase Structure
This paper describes a treebanking project for Hindi/Urdu. We are annotating dependency syntax, lexical predicate-argument structure, and phrase structure syntax in a coordinated and partly automated manner. The paper focuses on choices in syntactic representation, and the stages we think are most appropriate for annotating differnt types of information.
متن کاملValency Lexicon of Czech Verbs: Towards Formal Description of Valency and Its Modeling in an Electronic Language Resource
Valency refers to the capacity of verb (or a word belonging to another part of speech) to take a specific number and type of syntactically dependent language units. Valency information is thus related to particular lexemes and as such it is necessary to describe valency characteristics for separate lexemes in the form of lexicon entries. A valency lexicon is indispensable for any complex Natura...
